Want to be a health coach?

As an experienced coach, you may wish to start working in the field of health coaching or you already are and are facing challenges working with clients living with serious health issues. Either way, you want to learn more about health coaching to check what you do know and learn what else you could be doing to work effectively in this field.

If this is you, I offer Foundations 4 Health Coaching, a 1-1 course which provides you with a solid foundation to work with clients living with serious health issues. Click on each tab to learn more.

What does the course cover?

We examine the considerations and challenges of coaching people living with serious health issues through real life case studies (permission has been obtained from former clients and the case studies have been anonymised).

I will share strategies for meeting the challenges as well as the theory underpinning them, and you will develop your own strategies which suit your coaching approach.

If you have already work in the health coaching field, there will be the opportunity for you to share your experiences to reflect and learn from them.

Another important part of the course is examining your own approach to health and  where that comes from. I work on the basis that who we are as a person is who we are as a coach, so developing our self-awareness of this can help us understand the impact we can have on our coaching relationships.

There is light homework in between sessions to help you prepare so we get the most from our time together, and reflect on and embed your learning.

What is the time commitment?

There are six 90 sessions. There is flexibility in how frequently we meet every 2-4 weeks, so you can spread this over a period of 3 to 6 months.

Where does the health coaching course take place?

We meet online using Skype video so you have the flexibility of doing this course from home at a time convenient to your schedule. We can also schedule sessions to suit your pace of learning. We can meet every 2 weeks or even every 3-4 weeks. So you can complete the course in 3 months or even across 6 months.

Is any prior experience required for this course?

This course suits coaches with at least 100 hours coaching experience who do nto have experience coaching people with serious health issues and wish to work in this area.

This course is also suited to coaches who have started working in this space and have noticed differences as compared to coaching people who do not have serious health issues. But you have not yet had the opportunity to explore those differences in any depth with someone experienced working with this population and what they can mean for your coaching practice.

If you have already work in the health coaching field, there will be the opportunity for you to share your experiences to reflect and learn from them.

What is your approach like as a facilitator/coach?

This course suits coaches who are keen to deepen their reflection process, like to be asked thought provoking questions and have their thinking broadened, and enjoy learning the theory (in easy to understand language) which underpins the content being discussed.

Mentor Coaching to obtain ICF ACC credential

You may be early on in your coaching career, having just completed your training, or somewhere on the path to reaching your first 100 hours of working with clients. You love coaching, are keen to deepen your skills, plan to obtain the Associate Certified Coach credential with the International Coach Federation (ICF), and know that you need to meet the 10 hour mentor coaching requirement to do that.

I offer coaches like you the Mentor Coaching – Your First 100 Hours package to not only meet an ICF credentialing requirement, but also to deepen your reflection process and skills in using the ICF competencies, like to be asked thought provoking questions, have your thinking broadened. and celebrate how far you have come in your coaching journey. What does the mentor coaching package include?

The First 100 Hours mentor coaching package includes:

  • 10 hours of mentor coaching
  • 2 assessments by me of your coaching against the ICF competencies
  • Email support in between sessions

As such, I recommend you are working with at least 2-3 clients for the duration of our work so you can obtain current examples of your coaching and implement what you learn from our sessions.

So that I can do the assessments, you will need to provide recordings of two different sessions with clients whilst we work together. Ensure you obtain permission from your clients to record your coaching sessions and for a third-party, i.e. me, to listen to them.

The assessments are a two-way process. Whilst I am listening to your recordings outside of our sessions and doing the assessment, you will be doing a self-assessment by listening to your session, noting where you demonstrate the ICF competencies in action, and transcribing a section of the coaching session. We then come together to share the output of our assessments in the next session. We will both be doing this twice during our work together.

What is the value of transcribing part of my coaching sessions?

Based on having transcribed 30 hours of my own coaching sessions, I learned that transcribing allows you the opportunity to really slow down and listen to the subtleties of the interaction between you and your client.

You develop the skill of slowing down in the moment. This skill enables you to realise and see more quickly in real time what is going on in your coach-client relationships. Thus you have more choices what you as a coach do and how you adapt your approach with a client.

So although transcribing takes time, you are making an investment into your coaching abilities and practice.

But don’t worry, I am not asking you to transcribe 30 hours of your coaching! I ask that you transcribe one critical moment in each coaching session being assessed. I can’t say how long a critical moment is or should be as they will differ from client to client. It might be 10 minutes, 20 minutes, shorter or longer.

When transcribing, budget 15 minutes per 5 minutes of conversation. So if a critical moment is 15 minutes, budget approximately 45 minutes to transcribe.

I will give you information on the tools you need to transcribe effectively. They are free and easy to obtain.

How is mentor coaching different from coaching and supervision?

What is mentor coaching?

‘Mentor coaching’ is coaching for the development of your coaching skills. The aim is to achieve and demonstrate the levels of coaching competency demanded by the desired ICF credential you are seeking. So the topics for sessions focus on your coaching skills and how you are demonstrating the ICF competencies, for example:

  • I let coaching sessions over run the time contracted with the client
  • I think I have a tendency to be directive
  • I want to prepare differently for coaching sessions so I’m in a good place to coach
  • I notice that I focus on asking powerful questions and kind of miss what the client is saying

How does mentor coaching differ from coaching or supervision?

ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

According to the ICF, “Coaching Supervision is the interaction that occurs when a coach periodically brings his or her coaching work experiences to a coaching supervisor in order to engage in reflective dialogue and collaborative learning for the development and benefit of the coach and his or her clients.

Coaching Supervision offers a richer and broader opportunity for support and development. In Coaching Supervision, the coach is invited to focus much more on what is going on in their process and where the personal may be intruding on the professional. Note that topics of mentor coaching can be covered in supervision.”

What is the time commitment?

The package includes 10 hours of mentor coaching.

In addition, you will also need to budget

  • 2 hours for self-assessment of your coaching sessions (there will be two self-assessments to do)

and

  •  Time for implementing actions you choose to take as a result of our mentor coaching sessions and preparation before sessions.
How long do we work together?

The mentor coaching package takes place over a minimum of 3 months, which is a requirement of the ICF. Due to that, we cannot fit it into a shorter length of time.

However, you can spread the mentor coaching over a longer period, up to a year, and use this as an opportunity for ongoing professional development.

What is your approach like as a coach?

My style of coaching is based on my values of affiliation, having a positive impact, self-direction and integrity. These manifest themselves through a relational, insightful, and challenging yet supportive approach, which is informed by person-centred theory, adult learning, existentialism and systemic thinking. I believe in enabling people to learn for themselves and their ability to do so, and support them in that process. Therefore contracting and feedback is important to ensure a focus on your agenda and learning and the co-creative nature of our relationship. I am mindful of how I am and feel in relationship with you as it helps me to adapt and identify if the issue brought to coaching is being mirrored in how we work together. I believe that humans are relational beings and do not learn or change in isolation. A systemic way of working may involve drawing your issue, considering the impact on others of the change you want to make, how others’ impact you, obtaining feedback, or even a systemic constellation of your issue. Clients often remark that they were able to be open with me and felt heard. I listen to the content and process of your story and reflect back what I am hearing and not hearing, noticing and not noticing. My style has also been described as challenging, where insights, observations and questions raised awareness unexpectedly, yet were delivered in a supportive manner.

I often work somatically, getting you to pay close attention to what is going on in your body, heart and gut in addition to what you are thinking. This holistic approach raises your self-awareness, which in turn gives you more choices. I also pay attention to any parallel process which may be happening between you and me. That parallel process may be the topic you bring to our session playing out in the mentor coaching process between you and me. Sometimes this can be your client’s issue too. I’m attuned to those moments as they are rick opportunities for working with it in real time.
