What do we mean by acceptance when living with a serious health issue?

Have you or a loved one experienced a serious illness/injury, or the onset of a long-term condition which has been life changing for you in some way?
Perhaps you’ve found yourselves saying things like…
- “You need to accept what has happened to move on.”
- “I think I have to accept this for me to be happy again”
- “Reaching acceptance is the first step…”
In my experience, the concept of acceptance comes up repeatedly in the context of long-term conditions and serious illness or injury, and we all have very different, and sometimes opposing, views about it.
I’m curious about this and so have been talking to people like you to look at it in more depth.
My aim is to build a picture of what ‘acceptance’ means to people, how it impacts their recovery journey, and what could support them on their return journey to wellness. My intention is to share what I learn with people like you, and with healthcare professionals. I want to help develop effective ways to bring ease to the return journey to wellness for both the person affected, their carers, and their family.
Want to share your story of acceptance?
If you or someone close to you has experienced the onset of a serious illness or long-term condition in the past 2 years, are 18+ and you’re asking yourself these kind of questions around acceptance, I’d love to speak with you.
We’ll connect for an hour-long confidential interview consisting of open questions about your experience of acceptance. The findings will be reported on a thematic and anonymous basis so you won’t be identifiable.
If you would like to take part, or know someone else who would, you can get in touch by emailing me at barbara (at) returntowellness.co.uk or completing the contact form below. I will respond as soon as I can to schedule a time for us to talk.
