Healing the space where family relationships and health issues collide

GROUP WORKSHOP

11th May 2019

1-5pm

Kingston-upon-Thames, London

The space where family relationships and health issues collide can be a hard place to be

You want to restore communication and connection in your family

When a health issue suddenly becomes part of your family, it can be destabilising. Whoever has the health issue is experiencing a sudden change physically or mentally, many times both. The illness or injury demands a lot from everyone in different ways – spouses/partners, parents, children, siblings, the extended family, friends, etc. Family roles change, relationships can be tested to their core (or strengthened), it can feel relentless. You can all feel stuck in unhelpful patterns.

You want to:

  • Understand the role of this health issue in your family
  • Gain a new perspective of the changes in family relationships
  • Find ways you can contribute to restored balance and emotional wellbeing to yourself, your family, your health and life

Family Constellations

The Family Constellations approach can restore a sense of movement, balance and emotional wellbeing to your family

Using an experiential and powerful approach called Family Constellations, also known as Systemic Constellations, we take a systemic view of your family and health issue(s), looking at it through the lens of the the people and elements relevant to your issue. They may be family members (alive or deceased), other people, the health issue itself, even groups, organisations, abstract concepts, countries and more.

We do this by setting up a living visual map of the different elements of your issue . This is known as the constellation. Wooden figurines, post-it notes or floor markers can be used, or even people if it is a group workshop.

Through this process you will discover the hidden dynamics fuelling your issue, what is blocking movement, hidden loyalties and entanglements. This allows us to make interventions to restore a sense of movement, balance and wellbeing to your family system. This gives you new perspectives and awareness which in turn gives you choices on how you move forward.

Learn more about what a group workshop is like

A group of people with a variety of family and health issues come together for an afternoon to gain fresh perspectives on their issues and find a way to resolve them.

We work with about three participants’ issues. Everyone else may be a representative during the afternoon. The representative plays an important role in supporting the issue holder’s work by representing an element of their issue. If you are not a representative, you play an equally important role by holding a supportive space for people to find a way through their issues.

You can indicate in advance if you wish to be an issue holder. We select the issue holders on the day. If you said during the registration process that you wish to be an issue holder, I will be in touch with your beforehand to find out what your issue is.

As the facilitator, I have a brief conversation with the issue holder, who will then select other participants to represent the main elements of their issue. The issue holder then sets the representatives up as a living breathing visual map of their issue – the constellation. I work with the representatives and issue holder to identify the hidden dynamics and what is blocking movement in their system and determine ways to restore movement.

If you are not an issue holder, you will find that other people’s issues or parts of their issues may resonate strongly with you and you learn something from their constellation. Many people say their experience being a representative or even just witnessing a constellation can be very powerful and healing.

This is a very generous way of working where a group of people come together to share and support one another in an experiential workshop to restore flow in themselves, their family, their health and their lives.

This work can be very moving on many levels so I ask you to come with a spirit of generosity, curiosity and a willingness to participate and explore.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you define 'family'?

I take a broad view of ‘family’.

It may be the traditional wife, husband, children. Or it may be two women or two men with or without children. Or it may be a husband and wife who have chosen not to or cannot have children.

These days many people believe we create our own family outside our one of origin. So if you come with an issue about a friendship group where the dynamics have changed due to yours or another’s health issue, that’s ok too.

Yet this work often means we refer back to your family of origin, who brought you into this world and raised you as many of the strategies we use in relationships took their route in our childhood and were learned in our family of origin.

What is a 1-1 session like?

I have a brief conversation with you about your issue and the dynamics in your family. This may also involve asking the family’s history and key events.

We will then select the main elements of your issue. These main elements are often family members (who could be living or deceased) and can also be other people outside the family, the health issue, even groups, organisations, abstract concepts, countries and more.

We will use post-it notes, wooden figurines or floor markers to represent the various elements of your issue. These are known as ‘representatives’.

You set the representatives up as a living breathing visual map of your issue. This is known as the constellation.

Even just seeing how you set up your constellation can help you develop new awareness about your issue.

Because it’s a 1-1 session, I will have you stand in for other family members so you get a sense of what it is like for them. This is ‘standing in their shoes’ so to speak. This too helps you to develop new awareness about your issue.

I then work with the representatives and you to identify the hidden dynamics and what is blocking movement in their system and determine ways to restore movement.

This work can be very moving on many levels so I ask you to come with a spirit of generosity, curiosity and a willingness to participate and explore.

If I opt for a 1-1 session, will I need more than one?

This work is designed so people come once, whether to a 1-1 session or a group workshop to work on a specific issue.

Whilst working together we may identify other issues that could be addressed at a separate time.

But usually people have one session, go away and integrate what they learned into their daily life, and if they want to address a related or new issue, they get in touch.

Sometimes people like to attend the group workshop more than once because they learn a lot from being a representative for other people’s issues and enjoy learning about the Family Constellations approach.

Do members of my family need to come too?

No. You can come on your own to a 1-1 session or group workshop. Your family does not need to be with you.

If it’s a 1-1 session, we will use post-it notes, wooden figurines or floor markers to represent your other family members. You will then ‘step into the shoes’ so to speak of your other family members to get a sense of what it is like for them.

If it’s a group workshop, other people will stand in to represent your family members and any other elements of your issue.

The key thing is you are prepared to look at your role in the issue and what you can do to contribute to restored connection, communication and emotional wellbeing in your family.

What kind of issues do people come with?

People can come with a variety of issues. The following is just a sample. They key thing is there’s been a change, and not a good one, in family relationships due to the health issue (or due to the nature of the family relationships before the health issue arose). You are seeking to find ways to contribute to restored balance and emotional wellbeing in the family dynamics.

You have or had the health issue and the dynamics in your family relationships have changed and not gotten back to how they were before the health issue arrived.

A relationship has broken down or feels like it will and you are not sure what to do next.

Your partner/spouse or child may have the health issue and you’re in the caring/supporting role wanting to make things better for your spouse, partner or child and may not know where to start. You are also seeing the impact it is having on others in the family and it all feels overwhelming.

Your partner/spouse has the health issue but doesn’t want to talk much about it so you don’t know how to support them.

You may be looking after an ederly parent who has health issues. Maybe you had a good relationship with this parent whilst growing up. Maybe you didn’t. Maybe other family members are helping but there are disagreements on how best to help your parent. Maybe other family members aren’t helping.

You may not be in the primary caring/supporting role but you are witnessing the issues in the family becoming more apparent due to the health issue.

Will a Family Constellation make my (or my loved one's) health issue better?

The Family Constellations work allows you to see the hidden dynamics at play in your issue and relationships, which gives you insight and new perspectives on how you could move forward with it. As a result, many people experience less stress.

I have found with some clients that when they experience less stress, their physical symptoms lessen too. This came about in a research project I did which you can read about here where I was using the Family Constellations approach in my work with the research participants.

I have also had clients tell me that a family constellation helped to transform relationships with family members in a very positive way.

This way of working does not seek to replace your medical treatment. It also does not seek to make any medical diagnosis.

Family Constellation work can sit alongside any medical treatment you, or a loved one, may be having. Much like other complimentary therapies such as coaching, massage, accupuncture, shiatsu, reflexology, hypnotherapy, etc.

If at any time I think your issue would be better served by another suitably qualified professional, I will tell you that.
